FORENSIC CASEWORK

 

 

 


Polish Forensic Association carries out extensive activities in the area of forensic science including provision of forensic services to law enforcement agencies, attorneys' offices, administration, other institutions and individual persons in various areas of forensic science.

Forensic examinations are carried out in the Forensic Laboratory of the PTK Examination and Training Centre, which possesses sophisticated analytical instruments, necessary means and computer software (among others, videospectrocomparator, microinfrascopic system, GC/MS, IR spectrophotometer, stereoscope and biological microscopes, Photoshop, PC Crash, and others).

PTK forensic experts are highly qualified practitioners generally recognised in professional circles. Admission to PTK is conditioned by meeting rigorous requirements of the qualification procedure and is subject to decision of the Scientific Board. Currently, PTK has over 100 experts (mainly former employees of the Central Forensic Laboratory of the Polish Police and other police laboratories, as well as university scientists). Until the present moment, they have provided opinions in over 12 000 cases submitted by the law enforcement agencies, judicial organs and other clients. PTK offers short delivery times (on average ranging from 2 weeks to 30 days, and shorter in urgent cases).

The range of forensic examinations performed by PTK Examination and Training Centre is the following:

 

QUESTIONED DOCUMENTS

 
  • handwriting examination
  • typewriting examination
  • examination of stamps
  • authentication of Polish and foreign documents

PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY

 

Drugs

  • drug analyses (psychotropic and narcotic substances
  • including cannabis and THC),
  • identification of chemical substances.

Other analyses

  • analyses of alcohol and medicines,
  • analyses of flammable substances and post fire debris,
  • analyses of traces, such as: fibres, paint coats, car paints, glass, etc.analyses of explosive materials and devices,
  • comparative analyses of inks,
  • mineralogical examinations (soil analyses).


ROAD ACCIDENTS

 

 

  • reconstruction and analysis of road accidents,
  • opinions required in cases of insurance claims,
  • forensic medical examinations.


 

BIOLOGY

 
  • blood, hair, body fluids and excrement analyses,
  • DNA analysis.


ANTHROPOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS

 
  • identification of humans based on skull and photographs (superimposition),
  • identification of human remains.


FINGERPRINT EXAMINATIONS AND TRASEOLOGY

 
  • identification of fingermarks,
  • determining age of latent fingermarks,
  • identification of lip, ear and tooth marks,
  • identification of glove marks,
  • examinations of footwear marks and tyre impressions,
  • fingerprinting services for visa applications, etc.


PHOTOGRAPHY AND AUDIOVISUAL TECHNIQUES

 
  • examination of video recordings,
  • identification of persons and objects based on photographs and video recordings,
  • determination of type, system and authenticity of recordings (e.g. detecting attempted tampering with and editing of recordings on various media aimed at adulteration of evidence),
  • determination of number of copies.


TOOLMARK EXAMINATIONS

 

 

  • examination of toolmarks,
  • examination of locks,
  • examination of identification numbers on vehicles (VIN) firearms and other objects,
  • metal examinations,
  • examination of hallmarks.


FIREARMS AND BALLISTICS

 

 

  • examination of firearms, cartridge cases and bullets,
  • examination of gas weapons and electric stun guns,
  • examinations of traces of firearms use.


 

VOICEPRINT EXAMINATIONS

 

 

  • authentication of audio recordings,
  • identification of persons basing on voice recordings,
  • reproducing audio recordings,
  • examinations of audio equipment.


POLYGRAPH EXAMINATIONS

 

 

  • determining individual's knowledge on a crime in question.


 

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

 

 

  • analysis and recovery of data carriers contents,
  • analysis of data stored in computer memory and IT systems with an option of searching for specific data or information,
  • searching data in files removed from hard disc or following its full formatting,
    accessing password secured files,
  • examination of devices made with digital technology: analysis of construction, its application and content,
  • analysis of software and hardware in cases of infringements of copyright,
  • verifying and providing evidence for legality of beneficial ownership of computer programmes, games and multimedia products,
  • issuing forensic opinions concerning cases of Internet-related crimes,
  • examination and suitable recovery of data contained in mobile phones and SIM cards.


 

ELECTROTECHNICS

 

 

  • examination of electric installations and devices,
  • examination of alarm systems,
  • examination of vehicle light bulbs.


 

FIRE INVESTIGATIONS

 

 

  • determination of causes and circumstances of occurring fires.


 

PSYCHOLOGICAL OPINIONS

 

 

  • in cases relating to wills (assessment of capability to testate, consciousness and discretion of decision by testator at the time of testating),
  • cases relating to annulment of various contracts drawn up by a notary (assessment of cognitive efficiency and discretion of decision by the person entering the contract at the time of its signing),
  • family affairs (depriving of parental rights, e.g. due to mental disorder, addictions, mental illness; attribution of the right of custody),
  • examinations relating to post accident claims in cases of sustained trauma and its aftermath in psychological health of the aggrieved in cases of road accidents, accidents at work, etc.
